DepEd suspends classes in 3 provinces, other areas in Luzon

Preschool, elementary and high school classes were suspended in at least three provinces and several localities in Luzon as education officials anticipate heavy rains from tropical storm "Falcon" (international code name Meari) Friday. Several colleges in Metro Manila also announced the suspension of classes on Friday. In several messages on its Twitter account, the Department of Education (DepEd) said classes in kinder, elementary and high school are suspended in:

  • Bataan;
  • Zambales;
  • Pangasinan;
  • Isabela, and
  • Cagayan. The DepEd said the cancellation of classes in Bataan, Zambales, and Pangasinan was recommended by the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC). In the case of Isabela and Cagayan, the DepEd said classes were cancelled because these areas are under Storm Signal No. 1. The other areas where classes were suspended included: Region 3
  • Malolos, Bulacan, as declared by the city mayor;
  • Subic district (Zambales), classes in all levels are suspended on June 24. Region 4

  • Cotabato City DepEd Assistant Secretary Tonisito Umali sought understanding of parents for the late announcement of suspension of classes in some areas. Umali said the DepEd had adopted a decentralized approach since it would not be good if all orders came from the DepEd headquarters in Manila. He also said the policy of automatic suspension applies only to areas under storm signals. "Pag walang storm signals, ang bansa natin archipelago, hindi maganda ang galing sa DepEd kung ano nangyayari sa isang bayan sa amin manggagaling. Ang consideration diyan ang lakas ng buhos ng ulan kung may pagbabaha o panganib sa ating mag-aaral," he said in an interview on dzBB radio. He also said too-frequent suspensions could disrupt the school calendar, which has 202 school days and 180 school learning days.
