NYC pushes for 'youth champions' in ARMM appointees

In a resolution adopted Thursday, the National Youth Commission (NYC) urged the Selection Committee on Vacated Posts in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao — and whoever gets appointed ARMM OIC Governor — to appoint officials who will consult the youth in ARMM and champion their agenda. The terms of elected officials in ARMM expire next Aug. 15, and Malacañang has a committee to assist President Benigno Aquino III in selecting potential appointees who will take over. Aquino has yet to sign into law the bill passed by Congress postponing the ARMM polls and synchronizing it with the 2013 national and local elections. NYC Chairperson Leon Flores III said in a press statement Friday that the call for reforms in the ARMM is “long overdue" and pro-youth programs should have long been promoted to get the youth to participate and put to good use their talents and skills. “Matagal na dapat na napagtuunan ang mga programang para sa kabataan, kung saan puwede silang makisangkot at puwede nilang ipamalas ang kanilang galing at talento," Flores said. “But it will not be possible if there is no one in the government who will make it happen. We want a new breed of government officials in ARMM who are proactive and pro-youth!" he added. NYC in its statement expressed the belief “that the youth in Mindanao will be instrumental in solving the challenges of the region," adding that “a bureaucracy composed mostly of young and idealistic leaders who will advance the cause of the youth has to be in place to jumpstart the sweeping and programmatic reforms sorely needed in ARMM." The NYC is a cabinet-level government agency set up under the Youth in Nation-Building Act (Republic Act 8044) that specifically addresses issues surrounding the Filipino youth. —MRT/VS, GMA News
