SWS: 68% of Pinoys unsure if PNoy would succeed or fail

Nearly seven out of 10 Filipinos recently surveyed by pollster Social Weather Stations (SWS) say it is still too early to tell if President Benigno Simeon Aquino III will succeed or fail during his six-year term. The SWS survey showed that only 22 percent of the 1,200 adults surveyed nationwide were convinced that Aquino, who will mark his first year in office on June 30, will be successful. On the other hand, 10 percent of the respondents disagreed when SWS asked, "In the long run, do you think President Noynoy Aquino will be a successful or unsuccessful President, or do you think it is too early to tell?" The SWS conducted face-to-face interviews of 1,200 adults nationwide from June 2 to 6 and used sampling error margins of ±3% for national and ±6% for area percentages. The results were published on Monday on SWS' media partner BusinessWorld. Elected in a landslide Elected in a landslide in the May 2010 elections, Aquino will mark his first year in office on June 30. Aquino is the son of the late President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino and the late Senator Benigno Simeon Aquino Jr. The SWS survey recorded the following percentages of those who said it was too early to tell if Aquino will succeed or not as a president:

  • 74 percent in Balance Luzon;
  • 73 percent in Metro Manila;
  • 63 percent in the Visayas, and
  • 57 percent in Mindanao. "Minorities of 32 percent in Mindanao, 30 percent in the Visayas, 16 percent in Balance Luzon and 15 percent in Metro Manila say President Aquino will be successful," the SWS said. The percentages of those who said Aquino will be unsuccessful as a president are:
  • 11 percent in Metro Manila;
  • 11 percent in Mindanao;
  • 10 percent in Balance Luzon, and
  • 7 percent in the Visayas. "The proportion of those in the "too early to tell" category was greater the higher the socioeconomic class, the SWS said. This position was held by 81% in the ABC, 70% in the D or masa and 58% in the E classes," the SWS said. Success/failure judgments SWS said the trend was reversed when it comes to success or failure judgments. The percentages of those who said Aquino would do well as a president are:
  • 31 percent of the class E respondents;
  • 21 percent among the masa, and
  • only 10 percent in the ABC category, However, those who predicted failure comprised 11 percent in class E and 9 percent each in the D and ABC classes. Among those who predicted success, 82 percent were satisfied and 13 percent dissatisfied, resulting in an "excellent" net rating of +70%. For those in the "too early to tell" category 62 percent said they were satisfied, 20 percent were undecided and 18 percent were dissatisfied, resulting in a "good" net score of +44. Among those who said Aquino will not succeed, 42 percent said they were satisfied with Aquino’s performance, 21 percent were undecided and 35 percent dissatisfied for a "neutral" net rating of +7. The SWS classifies net satisfaction ratings of +70 and above as "excellent"; +50 to +69, "very good"; +30 to +49, "good"; +10 to +29, "moderate", +9 to -9, "neutral"; -10 to -29, "poor"; -30 to -49, "bad"; -50 to -69, "very bad"; -70 and below, "execrable." The same June 3-6 poll had found that overall, Aquino’s net satisfaction rating had fallen to a "good" +46 nationwide, with 64 percent of respondents indicating their approval and 18 percent saying they were not content. It was down from March’s "very good" net score of +51 (69 percent satisfied, 18 percent dissatisfied), which was also a drop from president’s best score of +64 -- also "very good" -- recorded in November last year, the SWS said. - VVP, GMA News
