MMDA: Four Metro cities to impose stricter laws vs. smoking July 1

Starting on July 1, four cities in Metro Manila will impose stricter laws against smoking, the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said. MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the following cities will implement stricter ordinances against smoking:

  • Caloocan;
  • Mandaluyong;
  • Muntinlupa, and
  • Navotas. "Mas mahigpit (ang ordinances nila dahil) ang kanilang local city council nakita ang pangangailangan sa kalusugan," Tolentino said in an interview on dzBB radio on Monday. Starting on July 1, the MMDA said it will apprehend people smoking in public places, a month since the agency started giving smokers "warnings" about the MMDA's anti-smoking campaign. Violators will be fined P500 on first offense while those who cannot afford to pay the fine will obliged to render an eight-hour community service, the MMDA said. Earlier, Tolentino said the public places where smoking is banned include public utility vehicles, terminals, jeeps, tricycles, schools, hospitals, bars, and restaurants. He also stressed that smoking will not be tolerated in the streets and in areas where food is being prepared. - VVP, GMA News
