PHL medical team to help Japan quake victims


Three months after the deadly March 11 magnitude-9.0 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the country gave the Philippines a clearance to send a 14-day medical mission to help the victims. According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), the team will include three medical doctors from the Department of Health (DOH). "The team will depart for Japan on June 28 and conclude their mission on July 13," the DFA said in a news article on its website. Those who will compose the team are:

  • Dr. Ma. Paz Corrales;
  • Dr. Aida Muncada, and
  • Dr. Sharon Triunfu. Japanese medical doctors, clinical psychologists, and consular personnel from the Philippine Embassy in Tokyo, will be assisting the Philippine team. The team will provide medical assistance, psycho-social counseling, and stress debriefing to the disaster victims, particularly to Filipino nationals and their families. The Philippine team will provide in mobile medical assistance operations in Iwate and Miyagi Prefectures, centering in Ofunato City and Rikuzen-Takata City in the southern part of Iwate Prefecture. Meanwhile, the Japanese Embassy in Manila said the Filipino team will work with Japanese medical doctors and clinical psychologists. “The Government of Japan deeply appreciates the cooperation extended by the Government of the Republic of the Philippines and hopes for the success of the medical team," it said. A send-off ceremony for the team was held on Monday afternoon at the Japanese Embassy. Sympathies and assistance Shortly after the quake, President Benigno Aquino III led Philippine officials in conveying sympathies and offering assistance, including sending medical professionals. "With the completion of the necessary arrangements, the Japanese Government has decided to accept the Philippine medical team to Japan," the DFA noted. The DFA said the Japanese government expressed its deep appreciation for the act of solidarity and cooperation extended by the Philippines. On March 25, the Japanese government also accepted from the Philippine government a donation of relief goods for Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures. - VVP, GMA News
