Ex-senator Webb confident Vizconde case will be closed

Days before the deadline for prosecutors to file new charges in the Vizconde massacre case, former Senator Freddie Webb, father of the acquitted Hubert Webb, exuded confidence that the case will finally be closed. The former legislator and basketball star player was at the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) office in Manila on Monday to file clarificatory statements regarding his birth certificate in connection with the ongoing reinvestigation of the massacre case. Interviewed by GMA News’ Chino Gaston on GMA News TV’s “Balitanghali" Webb said the case will likely reach its end when the period for filing new charges against suspects in the massacre lapses on June 30. The elder Webb also said Hubert is protected by the rule on double jeopardy, which forbids a suspect from being tried on the same charges twice. Malacañang in December ordered a reinvestigation of the Vizconde massacre after the Supreme Court acquitted Hubert Webb and six others who had been earlier convicted by a lower court of the murders of Estrellita, Carmela, and Jennifer Vizconde on June 30, 1991. The government task force, led by the Department of Justice and the Department of the Interior and Local Government, has at least three sets of suspects, including Hubert Webb and his former co-accused and fellow convicts in the celebrated case. — With Andreo Calonzo/ELR/VS, GMA News
