Trending dads on Google Philippines

The late former Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes grabbed the biggest online mindshare among Filipino fathers in the first six months of the year, according to latest data from Google Philippines. Reyes, who reportedly killed himself in front of his mother's grave in February, is survived by his five sons and wife Teresita Pernia Reyes. The former chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) was then embroiled in a Senate probe looking into the alleged "pabaon" system in the military. Reyes allegedly received P50 million when he stepped down from his AFP post in 2001, according to former military budget officer George Rabusa. In Google's "Most Searched Filipino dads" release recognizing the celebration of Father's Day this month, the news of Reyes' death was followed by a controversial celebrity in the person of radio jock Mo Twister. The radio and TV personality, known as Mohan Gumatay in real life, figured in the headlines following his much-publicized split with supposed girlfriend, actress Rhian Ramos. Gumatay, who has a child with ex-girlfriend Bunny Paras, had a heated argument over social networking site Twitter with Ramos in early May, which reportedly caused the break-up. Willie Revillame, an equally controversial personality, also made it to Google's list this month, landing in fifth place. Revillame, father to actress Meryll Soriano, drew flak from concerned viewers and civil society groups following the airing of a segment in his show "Willing Willie," where a six-year-old child was made to do a "macho dance." Some camps have charged Revillame with child abuse, but the beleaguered TV host maintained that exploiting the child was not the segment's intent. Following the criticisms, the show went off the air for one and a half months, only to be resurrected as "Wil Time Bigtime" in mid-May. Show me the Manny Prominent politicians likewise made it to Google's list, headlined by namesakes Rep. Manny Pacquiao and Senator Manny Villar. Villar, who lost his presidential bid to President Benigno Aquino III in 2010, figured in online searches after he was again declared the richest senator. According to the senator's Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net worth in 2010, Villar registered a total of P725.2 million net worth. Villar, however, was bested by Pacquiao as the wealthiest legislator for this year, after declaring a net worth amounting to approximately P1.4 billion. Pacquiao, who faced off with Shane Mosley in Las Vegas in May, became the poster boy of camps rallying against the passage of the Reproductive Health bill, a proposed measure that has greatly polarized the country. In several statements to the press, Pacquiao aired his staunch opposition to the bill, saying that had his father used a condom, he wouldn't have come to existence. "Bilang ama, ayoko po na turuan ang aking mga anak ng kalaswaan. Kaya po ako'y nakikiusap na labanan po natin ang RH bill (As a father, I don't want my children to be taught such lewdness. That's why I'm asking you to fight the RH bill)," he earlier said. But when the time came for debates on the floor of the House of Representatives, Pacquiao appeared not ready to rumble with the RH Bill proponents, disappointing his fans who were so used to witnessing his skill and speed on the ring. Other famous celebrity dads who made it to Google's list include wedding videographer Jason Magbanua; Kapuso star Paulo Avelino; actor Diether Ocampo; inspirational speaker Francis Kong; and showbiz reporter Ogie Diaz. — TJD, GMA News
