Pinoy students in Thailand join Rizal essay, art contests


Filipino students in Thailand joined oratorical, essay and poster-making contests for the 150th birth anniversary of national hero Dr. Jose Rizal, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said on Tuesday. "The contestants were Filipino students, aged 8 to 16 years old, from the Ark-Bangkok Schoolhouse and Ministry Center, a non-profit organization offering quality and affordable education to Filipino children in Bangkok," the DFA said in a news article posted on its website. The winners were:

  • Maureen Lylani De Asis for the oratorical contest;
  • Jacquelyn Lilly Guchone for the essay writing sontest; and
  • Lovely Diptii Catequista for the poster-making contest. The board of judges included:
  • Philippine Ambassador Linglingay Lacanlale;
  • Defense and Armed Forces Attaché Colonel Manuel Gonzales;
  • Order of the Knights of Rizal-Bangkok Chapter Commander Sir George Reiff, and
  • Shirley Otera, a teacher at Ark-Bangkok Schoolhouse. The DFA said the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok held the Rizal-related activities, and a flag ceremony, on June 21. Rizal's influence Lacanlale said Rizal's influence is especially critical among today's Filipino youth pressured by a barrage of both positive and negative social influences. She also noted the teachings of Rizal, especially on love of country, are timeless. Highlighted during the activity was Rizal's great passion for education and his pursuit of new ideas that led him to visit many foreign countries like Spain, Germany, Austria, and Hong Kong; and to learn to speak as many as 22 languages. The guests at the celebration included Sir George Reiff and Senator Usanakorn Amatyakul and Police Major General Vibool Pakamas, who are also members of the Order of the Knights of Rizal-Bangkok Chapter. - VVP, GMA News
