Weather: More rains loom over Mindanao, says PAGASA

Following flash floods that killed at least 25 in Davao City, more rains still loom over parts of Mindanao due to an inter-tropical convergence zone, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Thursday. PAGASA forecaster Joel Jesusa said that while there is no low-pressure area expected to form this week, the ITCZ will bring rains over parts of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. "Talagang nagpe-persist ngayon ang ITCZ kaya tuluy-tuloy halos ang pag-ulan diyan (The ITCZ will persist over the area so we can still expect rains in those areas)," Jesusa said in an interview on dzBB radio. When asked if residents in Davao and Cotabato – which also experienced recent floods – should remain vigilant and not yet relax, Jesusa said, "Yes." At least 25 people were confirmed dead in flash floods that hit at least four villages in Davao City following heavy rains since Tuesday night. Meanwhile, PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin said the ITCZ is affecting southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. "Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms," it said. 15 still missing Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte said at least 15 people remain missing even as search operations were due to resume Thursday morning. "Estimate namin sa damage mga P40 million, pero tingin namin mas malaki pa (Our estimated damage is P40 million. But we believe the damage may be greater)," she said in a separate interview on dzBB. Duterte also said the Department of Public Works and Highways has given the green light for them to use a Balusung Bridge, which was earlier believed damaged. "Hindi ito mahaba pero importante siya. nasa major highway ito papuntang south (It is not long but it is important because it is a link to a major highway)," she said. — LBG, GMA News
