Manila Police water cut off after failure to pay bills

No thanks to unpaid bills, the Manila Police District has had its water service cut off, even as the headquarter faces the prospect of having to work in the dark as well. The MPD has yet to pay water concessionaire Maynilad Water some P14 million in unpaid bills since 2005, according to a report on dzBB radio Friday. It quoted MPD Logistics Division head Superintendent Luis Francisco Jr. as saying Maynilad may resume water service if the MPD settles at least 30 percent of its debts. A separate report by radio dzBB's Carlo Mateo said the MPD has asked the Bureau of Fire Protection for help in addressing its water shortage.

On the other hand, the dzBB report said the MPD also faces the prospect of having its electricity cut off by the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco). The MPD presently owes Meralco some P20 million, the dzBB report said. Francisco said he has informed the Metro Manila police office of the MPD’s predicament. He said the MPD gets its budget from the National Capital Region Police Office in Taguig City. — LBG, GMA News
