GMail previews new look

Days after Google introduced changes to its homepage, the search giant previewed some "interface updates" for its Gmail service. Google said its plan is for Gmail's new interface to "expand dynamically" to accommodate different screen sizes and user preferences. "(We're) embarking on a series of interface updates to help strip out unnecessary clutter and make Gmail as beautiful as it is powerful. This is part of a Google-wide effort to bring you an experience that’s more focused, elastic, and effortless across all of our products," user experience designer Jason Cornwell said in a blog post. He said Google had added countless features to Gmail over the years, making it an increasingly powerful communication hub. But along the way, he said Gmail's interface has also become more cluttered and complex. Cornwell said the changes are not going to happen all at once, and that Google will work on these upgrades gradually over the next few months. As of Friday, Google gave users a sneak peek of its “Preview" and “Preview (Dense)" themes. "Our new interface will eventually expand dynamically to accommodate different screen sizes and user preferences, but until then you can pick the information density that you prefer," he said. Cornwell noted the new themes have a "much cleaner, modern look" although with a few rough edges. Also, he said Google Calendar is getting a new look in the next few days. — TJD, GMA News
