DILG: Sara Duterte could lose her post due to mauling incident

Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo on Friday said Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio could be removed from her post if it could be proven that she abused her powers when she mauled a city court sheriff. In a GMA News 24 Oras report, Robredo said a "motu proprio" investigation would be carried out Monday to determine the culpability of the mayor during a demolition operation in Barangay Monteverde in Davao City's Agdao district. Duterte-Carpio earlier explained she lost her temper because City Sheriff Abe Andres of the Regional Trial Court in Davao City refused to heed her request of pushing back the demolition by two hours or until she arrived in the area. Duterte-Carpio said she could not immediately drop by to oversee the demolition operation because she was busy leading a relief operation in another part of the city that had been badly hit by floods brought by incessant rains in the region. Before she arrived at the demolition site, villagers had already tried driving away the demolition team and the police escorts, throwing stones and sharp objects at them. After learning that the situation had turned violent, Duterte-Carpio rushed to the site, summoned Andres — who was there to serve the court order — and punched him in the face and head as he was approaching. Robredo said Duterte-Carpio could end up being either reprimanded or dismissed from public office due to her actions. Robredo said being a former Mayor of Naga City himself, he understood Duterte-Carpio's situation of having to divide her time and effort between the flood victims in a number of inundated villages in the city and ensuring a peaceful demolition in Agdao. However, Robredo said the investigation would focus on the people involved in the riot that ensued during the demolition and why Duterte-Carpio had to resort to violence against Andres. Andres suffered bruises on his face and head, and had to be brought to the hospital. After he was discharged from the hospital, the sheriff said he does not intend to file assault charges against Duterte-Carpio. — VS, GMA News
