Weather: 2 LPAs may bring floods, landslides to most of PHL

Two low-pressure areas (LPAs) off Palawan and Mindanao threaten to bring flash floods and landslides over parts of Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, state weather forecasters said Sunday. In its 5 a.m. bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said one of the LPAs was estimated at 200 km northeast of Puerto Princesa City (Palawan) as of 2 a.m. PAGASA said the second LPA was estimated at 710 km east of Mindanao, embedded along the intertropical convergence zone (ITZC) affecting Visayas and Mindanao. "Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms becoming cloudy with widespread rains over Northern Palawan, Western Visayas and Eastern and Southern Mindanao which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," it said. Philippine weather site Typhoon2000 said the LPA near Palawan is not expected to intensify. But it said a tropical cyclone formation is possible between July 5 and 10. Should this happen, the cyclone will be codenamed "Goring." Meanwhile, PAGASA said the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms mostly in the afternoon or evening. It added light to moderate winds blowing from the East to Southeast will prevail over Luzon and coming from the Southwest to West over the rest of the country. — LBG, GMA News
