Weather: LPA may bring floods, landslides to Palawan, Mindanao

A low-pressure area east of Northern Samar threatens to bring flash floods and landslides to Palawan, as well as to flood- and landslide-hit areas in Mindanao, state weather forecasters said Tuesday. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration also said the LPA still has a chance of becoming a cyclone. "Posible kasi makapal ang kaulapan doon, posibleng magkaroon ng flash floods at landslide (It is still possible there will be flash floods and landslides because the cloud formation over those areas remains very thick)," PAGASA forecaster Connie Dadivas said in an interview on dzBB radio, when asked about the chances of floods and landslides in Davao and Bukidnon. Davao City is still recovering from flash floods that hit at least five villages there last week. At least 30 people were reported killed due to the floods. On the other hand, at least six people were reported killed when a landslide hit Bukidnon province this week. "Kahapon medyo tumama talaga doon ang thunderstorm cloud kaya malakas ang ulan, nag-record tayo 30 mm for three hours (On Monday, a thunderstorm hit Bukidnon so the rains there were heavy. We recorded 30 mm in three hours)," Dadivas said. She also said rain was heavy in Davao Monday. She said they recorded 26 mm of rainfall in Davao City. Dadivas also said the LPA still has a chance of intensifying into a cyclone, although its chances of doing so at this time are "slim." The LPA would be codenamed "Goring" should it develop into a cyclone while in Philippine territory. "Sa ngayon slim chance ang nakikita natin pero meron pa ring possibility kasi nasa karagatan pa ito (For now, its chances of becoming a cyclone are slim but there is still a chance because it is still at sea)," she said. Floods, landslides in Palawan too PAGASA's 5 a.m. bulletin said the LPA was estimated at 610 km east of Northern Samar, embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting Southern Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao. "Central and Southern Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms becoming widespread rains over the eastern sections and Palawan which may trigger flashfloods and landslides," PAGASA said in its advisory. It added that the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to cloudy with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. — RSJ, GMA News
