Weather: 2nd low-pressure area spotted off Catanduanes

Flash floods and landslides threaten parts of Central and Southern Luzon, including Palawan, as two low-pressure areas are expected to bring rains over the area. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said one LPA was estimated at 590 km northeast of Virac, Catanduanes. In its 11 a.m. advisory, PAGASA said another LPA was estimated at 190 km east northeast of Catarman, Northern Samar, embedded along the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) affecting Central and Southern Luzon and the Visayas. "These weather systems are expected to bring widespread rains over eastern section of Central and Southern Luzon including Palawan which may trigger flash floods and landslides," PAGASA said. Earlier, PAGASA forecaster Connie Dadivas said floods and landslides are possible in flood- and landslide-hit areas in Mindanao, including Davao and Bukidnon. Dadivas also said the LPA still has a chance of intensifying into a cyclone, although its chances of doing so at this time are "slim." The LPA would be codenamed "Goring" should it develop into a cyclone while in Philippine territory. "Sa ngayon slim chance ang nakikita natin pero meron pa ring possibility kasi nasa karagatan pa ito (For now, its chances of becoming a cyclone are slim but there is still a chance because it is still at sea)," she said. — RSJ, GMA News
