Astronaut: Space station Internet not fast enough for gaming

There may be many high-tech things one can do inside the International Space Station (ISS), but online video gaming is not one of them. Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfiel said the Internet connection speed aboard the ISS is about as fast as a dial-up connection, according to a report on Canada’s CTV. “Hadfield noted that since the spacecraft travels at eight kilometers per second, the speed of the station’s Internet connection is about the same as dial-up," the CTV report said. But the CTV report also quoted Hadfield as saying he does not mind not being able to play online games, saying being at the ISS is better than playing any game. Hadfield has flown two missions in space and is scheduled to be the first Canadian to command the ISS when he returns in late 2012, it added. A separate story on PC World said the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is looking into the possibility of bringing 100 megabit-per-second Internet to the space station. It noted that in 2009, NASA had said it was prepping a Communication Navigation and Networking Reconfigurable Testbed, (or CoNNeCT), supposedly to be added to the ISS this year. — LBG, GMA News
