Wordpress: 50 million sites and counting

Open-source blogging platform WordPress reached a new milestone over the weekend as the number of blogs using its platform breached the 50-million mark. As of 9pm Monday (Manila time), WordPress.com claimed to have some 50,139,776 WordPress sites worldwide, with WordPress.com hosting about half that number. "The following stats are for WordPress.com only, not including all of the activity on self-hosted blogs. (Yet!)," it said in its stats page. Andrew Nacin, WordPress' core developer, said on his Twitter account that WordPress passed 50 million at about midnight Sunday (Manila time). It also said some 287 million people view more than 2.5 billion pages each month, while WordPress.com produces 500,000 new posts and 400,000 new comments daily. Presently, WordPress blogs are written in more than 120 languages, 66 percent of which are in English, with Spanish a far second at 8.7 percent and Portuguese in third at 6.5 percent. Other languages include Indonesian (3.5 percent), Italian (2 percent), German (1.8 percent), French (1.4 percent), Russian (1.1 percent), Vietnamese (1.1 percent), and Swedish (1.0 percent). An article on The Next Web said about 210 posts and 188 comments are submitted each minute. "The stats page counts a total of nearly 77 million words written, almost double the size of the Encyclopedia Britannica. That's just WordPress users... in one day," it said. — TJD, GMA News
