Google beefs up spam filtering for voice calls

Telemarketers and stalkers, be warned. Trying to call your target via Google Voice may no longer be as easy as it used to be. Google has beefed up its spam filtering capabilities for its "Google Voice" service, now allowing even voice calls to be filtered and automatically blocked. "Thanks to the help of the thousands of Google Voice users who mark calls as spam everyday—and our own spam identification tools—it is now possible to automatically redirect calls, texts, and voicemails from any of the numbers in our database directly into your spam folder," software engineering intern Alexander Rybak said in a blog post. Rybak said such filtering could happen automatically - even before unwanted calls reach one's phone. He said one can enable this feature on Google Voice settings by checking the box next to "Global Spam Filtering." Numbers incorrectly marked as spam can be unblocked, he added. "With your continued help marking spammy numbers (and correcting mis-labeled spam), we can continue to refine our filter and prevent annoying unwanted calls from making it to other Google Voice users," Rybak said. One can also block individual callers by going to Google Voice Settings and checking the proper options. — RSJ, GMA News
