1 killed in Cebu City fire

At least one person was reported killed in a fire that razed at least 100 houses in a residential area in Cebu City late Wednesday. Cebu City fire marshal Superintendent Anderson Comar cited initial reports identifying the fatality as Domingo Gacasan, radio dzBB's Cebu affiliate reported Thursday. The report said the body of Gacasan, who was unable to flee from his house during the fire, was found only early Thursday. More than 100 houses were destroyed in the fire, which initial investigation showed started at the house of one Gregoria Bacon in Punta Princesa village.

Arson investigators initially estimated the damage to property at P300,000. Arson investigators are also verifying reports that residents heard an explosion before the fire started to spread in the neighborhood. Firefighters had a hard time battling the blaze because of the narrow passageways in the area. The report said a heavy downpour helped douse the fire, the third in Cebu City so far this week. — LBG, GMA News
