CBCP: PHL to join 'Asian Youth Gathering' in Madrid

At least 50 Filipino youths and 20 facilitators will join the Asian Youth Gathering (AYG) in Madrid, Spain on August 17, during the World Youth Day (WYD) 2011 celebration. The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) said the AYG will give Asian youth delegates the WYD 2011 message in an Asian context. “The National Secretariat for Youth Apostolate, the implementing arm of the Episcopal Commission on Youth, will select 50 participants to attend the AYG, along with 20 facilitators from among the 436 pilgrims of ECY (Episcopal Commission on the Youth) Philippines," the CBCP said in an article posted on Thursday on its news site. The previous AYGs featured cultural presentations in a youth festival-style setup, the CBCP noted. For this year, the AYG will feature two events:

  • the Asian Youth Forum, which will be participated in by some 500 Asian youth delegates; and
  • the Asian Youth Prayer, which will be open to all Asian delegates. The Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conference-Office of Laity and Family Youth Desk executive secretary Jessica Joy Candelario said the AYG started during the 12th World Youth Day in Paris, France where bishops from the FABC met and established the youth desk. The CBCP noted one of the modules of the AYG states that young people must:
  • Understand the message of the WYD theme in the context of their personal lives in the living realities of Asia;
  • Appreciate their faith as a gift that unites them as one community;
  • Commit themselves to a personal and growing relationship with Christ;
  • Articulate their faith within their culture and their reality; and
  • Stand firm in their faith conviction by concretely responding to a particular issue in their country. The OLF Youth Desk will hold a briefing and orientation on July 29 to 30 at the Bukal ng Tipan Center in Taytay, Rizal for the pre-selected 50 delegates, the CBCP said. - VVP, GMA News
