Twitter turns 5, now sends 350B tweets daily

Micro-blogging site Twitter has indeed grown after five years, now sending some 350 billion tweets a day compared to a mere 224 tweets on its very first day of operation. But Twitter’s engineers, which issued the statistics as Twitter marked its fifth anniversary on July 15, said the numbers are more a reflection of “how passionate" Twitter users are. “Delivering 350 billion Tweets a day is a terribly fun engineering challenge. But, it doesn’t capture how passionate our users are," they said in a tweet at about midnight Friday Manila time. For its part, Twitter itself noted more than 600,000 new users signing up for its service on July 14. “It took us more than 16 months to reach the first 600,000 Twitter accounts," it said. Also, it noted that while 224 tweets were sent on Twitter’s first day on July 15, 2006, users now send 224 tweets in less than 1/10 of a second. “There were 224 Tweets sent on July 15, 2006. Today, users send that many Tweets in less than a tenth of a second," it said. But after five years, Twitter is also losing three of its co-founders, who left to re-launch a venture to build and run web products. Biz Stone, Evan Williams and Jason Goldman announced their plans to “restart" Obvious Corp., a company that can be considered a parent of Twitter. — LBG, GMA News
