EU delegation to visit PNP on July 18

A European Union delegation will visit the Philippine National Police headquarters Monday to check on the progress of law enforcers in combating extra-judicial killings and human rights violations. The EU visit is in line with its “Philippines Justice Support" (EPJUST) program, which was funded and started in October 2009. “The program is mandated to assist the country in addressing issues on extra-legal killings and enforced disappearances [and] awareness of law enforcers on human rights," the PNP said in a news release. “It aims to enhance the capacity and effectiveness of the country’s criminal justice system, Commission on Human Rights, and civil society organizations in performing their respective duties and tasks," it added. Expected to welcome the EU delegates are PNP officials and personnel, guests from the Department of Justice, and members of EPJUST expert team, according to the news release. The PNP and DOJ will deliver presentations on their improvements in combating extra-judicial killings and human rights violations. They will also bare actions towards equipping law enforcers in the investigation and prosecution of suspects. The PNP said the delegates will visit some of the facilities made possible through the support of EPJUST program. Part of the visit will be the School for Investigation and Detective Development and the PNP Crime Laboratory. — JE, GMA News
