Weather: ‘Ineng’ maintains strength; gale warning up over Luzon


State weather forecasters warned fishermen and small seacraft off Luzon against strong winds and big waves as typhoon "Ineng" (international code name Ma-on) maintained its strength Sunday afternoon. The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) also warned of rains and possible thunderstorms in parts of Mindanao. "Strong to gale force (winds are) expected to affect the seaboards of Northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Central and of Southern Luzon. Fishing boats and other small seacrafts are advised not to venture out into the sea while larger sea vessels are alerted against big waves," it said in its 5 p.m. gale warning. As of 2 p.m. Sunday, PAGASA said the eye of "Ineng" was located at 1,210 km east-northeast of Basco, Batanes in extreme Northern Luzon. It packed maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph, and is forecast to move northwest at 24 kph. PAGASA earlier said "Ineng" was expected to leave Philippine territory Sunday evening. Rains over Mindanao Meanwhile, PAGASA said Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms, while the rest of the country will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rainshowers and thunderstorms. "Moderate to strong winds blowing from the Southwest will prevail over Luzon and Visayas and the coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough. Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the Southwest with slight to moderate seas," it said in its 5 p.m. bulletin.
