Hackers jailbreak Apple's latest update

The cat-and-mouse game continues: Less than a week after it was released, Apple Inc.’s latest patch for its iOS operating system was jailbroken again. Over the weekend, redsn0w issued a new jailbreak, this time for the iOS 4.3.4, but without the wireless jailbreak capability for now. "(We) have a new redsn0w 0.9.8b3 that supports a TETHERED jailbreak for iOS 4.3.4 on all devices that have 4.3.4 except the iPad2," redsn0w said in a blog post. But redsn0w warned interested jailbreakers to stay back at 4.3.3 as that is where the untethered jailbreak is! There are no new features in 4.3.4 but only fixes for jailbreak exploits, redsn0w added. Also, redsn0w released a tethered jailbreak for the upcoming iOS 5. The jailbreak also does not cover the iPad 2 yet, but covers:

  • iPod touch 3G
  • iPod touch 4G
  • iPad 1
  • iPhone3GS * iPhone4 (GSM) * iPhone4 (CDMA) "THIS IS A TETHERED JAILBREAK ONLY! No new exploits are being exposed with this jailbreak (it uses geohot’s limera1n bootrom exploit), but that comes at a cost," redsn0w cautioned. Also, redsn0w advised jailbreakers to use the jailbreak to "Just boot tethered now" to be able to use many things, including Cydia and Safari. "If you see a white icon for Cydia, or if Cydia or Safari crash when you open them, it’s because you didn’t boot tethered," the blog said. Redsn0w suggested that this jailbreak is intended only for developers of jailbroken apps. "There are just too many broken components (Apple’s official apps, 3rd-party App Store apps, Cydia apps, MobileSubstrate apps, etc) for this to be useful to anyone but those truly looking to fix bugs in their iOS 5 jailbroken apps. (Seriously!)," redsn0w said. As such, redsn0w said unlockers and those preserving their unlockable basebands should stay away from this. Redsn0w likewise warned one needs to be an iOS developer with a registered ID to get past all the new activation screens. Meanwhile, a separate article on PC Magazine noted the hack came shortly after Apple patched its iOS to version 4.3.4 to plug a PDF vulnerability that is used in jailbreaking. It said that so long as a user doesn’t mind going about an iOS jailbreak “the old-fashioned way," - using redsn0w and PwnageTool to jailbreak most updated iOS devices. — RSJ, GMA News
