Romania recovers 64 warheads stolen from train

Romanian officials have recovered 64 missile warheads which over the weekend were stolen from a train, reported the British Broadcasting Company (BBC) on their website on Tuesday morning (Manila time). BBC cited Romanian police spokesman Florin Hulea who reassured the public that the warheads posed no risk, being “in component form without explosives." The warheads were stolen from a railway car carrying military equipment to neighbouring Bulgaria on Saturday, the report said. Investigators believe the missiles were stolen for their scrap metal value. BBC cited Romanian media which recounted that the freight train had been found in Giurgiu, southern Romania, with its railway car doors forced open and four boxes of 16 warheads stolen. Bulgaria's economy ministry said the warheads belonged to Grad missiles which are normally fired from multiple-rocket launchers, the report added. BBC cited a statement of the Bulgarian government that the shipment was part of a transfer of "nonfunctional components and parts" for reprocessing at one of Bulgaria's largest military factories. — MRT/RSJ, GMA News
