Toshiba website hacked

Hackers broke into a website of Japanese electronics giant Toshiba, compromising the personal data of some 7,520 customers, a computer security firm reported Tuesday (Manila time). Sophos said Toshiba announced this weekend the hacked web server run by its US sales subsidiary contained the email addresses, telephone numbers and passwords of customers. “The Japanese electronics firm said that the server was run by Toshiba America Information Systems Inc., and held personal data relating to 7,520 customers. Fortunately, according to the firm, the personal information exposed did not include any credit card data," Sophos said in a blog post. It said cybercriminals can now “try out" the passwords to see if they unlock any of their other online accounts, and can target them with attacks pretending to come from Toshiba. Sophos cited a Wall Street Journal report quoting a Toshiba spokesperson as saying that the Toshiba subsidiary’s IT staff first noticed a problem with the web server on July 11, and confirmed on July 13 that it had been hacked. The report said the firm had informed customers potentially affected by the hack of the problem. — TJD, GMA News
