3 aftershocks hit Zambales after magnitude-5.9 quake
Following a predawn magnitude-5.9 quake that was felt in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, state seismologists warned of possible aftershocks, at least three of which had been recorded early Tuesday in Zambales province. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology also amended its report on the initial quake, which it said was at magnitude 5.9 and not magnitude 6.2 as it initially reported. The first aftershock measured at magnitude 3.9 was recorded at 2:12 a.m., with the epicenter at 21 km southwest of Iba, Zambales. A second aftershock measuring magnitude 4.0 was recorded at 3:10 a.m., with the epicenter at 25 km southwest of Iba, Zambales. The third aftershock measuring magnitude 2.8 was recorded at 3:34 a.m., with the epicenter at 4 km southwest of Iba, Zambales. No damage was expected from the aftershocks, Phivolcs said.
