Classes suspended in NCR, other parts of Luzon


(Updated July 27, 12:11 a.m.) The Department of Education (DepEd) has suspended pre-school to high school classes in the National Capital Region and other parts of Luzon on Wednesday due to the expected heavy rains brought by Tropical Storm Juaning. DepEd-NCR director Elena Ruiz made the announcement on the suspension of classes in Metro Manila on GMA News' "24 Oras" Tuesday night. Shortly before midnight on Tuesday, GMA News “Saksi" reported that pre-school to high school classes are also suspended in Region III and Region IV-A. In Occidental Mindoro, classes are suspended for pre-school and elementary, the newscast added. Only pre-school classes are cancelled in Abra, Apayao, Kalinga, Mountain Province, Benguet, Isabela, Cagayan, and Nueva Vizcaya, according to “Saksi." Based on the recommendations of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council and a directive of Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa, presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda also announced the suspension of tertiary classes in Metro Manila on Wednesday. Under Signal No. 2 Metro Manila and 16 other areas remain under Storm Signal No. 2, according to an 11:20 p.m. update from the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on “Saksi." Areas under Storm Signal No. 2 include: · Camarines Provinces (Norte and Sur) · Albay · Catanduanes · Pangasinan · Nueva Ecija · Zambales · Pampanga · Tarlac · Bulacan · Bataan · Rizal · Cavite · Laguna · Batangas · Quezon · Polillo Island Under Storm Signal No. 1 are: · Ilocos Norte · Ilocos Sur · Apayao · Cagayan · Abra · Kalinga · Isabela · Mt. Province · Ifugao · La Union · Benguet · Nueva Vizcaya · Quirino · Aurora · Mindoro Provinces · Lubang Island · Marinduque · Romblon · Burias Island · Masbate · Ticao Island · Sorsogon Juaning is expected to make landfall in Polillo Island by dawn on Wednesday, according to PAGASA. - KBK/PE/VS, GMA News
