NDRRMC: Death toll from 'Juaning' rises to 15; 9 missing


The death toll from tropical storm "Juaning" (Nock-Ten) rose to at least 15 early Wednesday, even as at least 31 were injured and nine remained missing. In its 6 a.m. update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said 10 of the fatalities were from Bicol and three from Southern Luzon. A 14th fatality was from Iloilo. But as of 9 a.m., a report by radio dzBB's Benjie Liwanag Jr. said the NDRRMC recorded a 15th fatality, Cristy de Mesa, 13, who drowned in Sto. Niño village in Mulanay, Quezon province. Of the fatalities from Bicol, seven were from Albay, two from Catanduanes, and one in Camarines Sur. The fatalities from Southern Luzon included two in Cavite and one in Marinduque. Of the 31 injured, 27 were from Iloilo, two from Cavite, one each from Catanduanes and Albay. Meanwhile, the nine missing included two from Perez town in Quezon and one from Lucena City; two in Catanduanes, three in Albay and one in Camarines Norte. At least 30 survivors were rescued, including six from Eastern Samar, 15 from Polilio Island, and nine from Marinduque. The NDRRMC said Juaning affected at least 129,576 families or 645,137 people in Southern Luzon and Bicol regions. Of these, 129,355 families or 643,983 were from Camarines Sur and Albay in Bicol. At least 337 people were stranded in Bicol as of 10 p.m. Tuesday, along with nine trucks, five cars, five buses, and 17 vessels. In Southern Luzon, at least 533 passengers were stranded in Mamburao, Batangas, Puerto Real and Lucena. In Cagayan, at least 22 passengers were stranded in Aparri. Brownout Sorsogon has been without power since 2:40 a.m. Tuesday due to a precautionary power shutdown by the National Power Corp. In Southern Luzon (Region IV-B), rotational brownouts are being adopted in Marinduque due to strong winds detaching some electric cables. Several National Grid Corp. of the Philippines transmission lines were tripped, including those in Southern Luzon and Bicol. Impassable roads In Region IV-B, the road was rendered impassable in Sitio Caginsa, in Brgy. Casay in San Francisco, Quezon. In Bicol, the following were not passable:

  • Daang Maharlika Nabua section, road cut
  • Nabua-Balatan Road Section
  • Ligao-Tabaco, Sto. Domingo Boundary-Pawwabalading, Malinao
  • Daang Maharlika (four sections in Camalig, Culiat Draga, Legaspi Punta de Jesus, Comun-murtado-Penafrancia)
  • Legaspi-Punta de Jesus Km 529+300 to Km 530+000
  • Talin-Talin Section
  • Airport Road brgy Taromata B in San Isidro, Sorsogon
Floods Three villages in San Francisco, Quezon (Poblacion 2, Cawayan 1 and 2) had waist-deep floods, affecting 50 families or 250 people. They were evacuated to the Central Annex School, ABC Building and Parochial Church. Landslides In Southern Luzon, landslides rendered roads impassable in Sitio Caginsa, Brgy. Casay, San Francisco, Quezon. In Bicol, landslides occurred in the towns of Presentacion; Tinambac; Labawan, Buhi; and Camangahan, Balatan, all in Camarines Sur; Brgy.
