NDRRMC: ‘Juaning’ death toll now 35

The death toll from Tropical Storm Juaning (Nock-Ten) rose to 35 Thursday afternoon, with the latest recorded fatalities coming from the Cordillera Autonomous Region, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. In its 2 p.m. update, the NDRRMC also said at least 36 people were reported injured, while 25 people remained missing. All four recent fatalities were killed in a landslide in Aguinaldo town in Ifugao. They were identified as:

  • SPO2 Ricky Agwit
  • SPO2 Jeff Domingo
  • Bo-oy Machingi
  • Dino Nabban The NDRRMC said Juaning affected at least 146,460 families or 728,554 people in 487 villages in 55 towns and seven cities in 15 provinces. Of these, 25,758 families or 115,369 people were brought to 183 evacuation centers. Malacañang, meanwhile, said it will look into why there was still a high number of casualties due to Juaning amid the updated warnings from the weather forecasting agency. “Whether there’s a storm or not, araw-araw mayroon kaming natatanggap na status report. As to the deaths, I think that is something we will have to look into, kung bakit medyo mataas itong death toll ngayon," presidential spokesperson Edwin Lacierda said at a press briefing. Lacierda said the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) provides Cabinet members and local government officials weather updates. - with Amita O.
