DSWD releases P28.96M for cash-for-work programs

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has released P28.96 million for cash-for-work programs in areas hit by at least three killer cyclones in 2009. In a news release, the DSWD said the amount aims to benefit 5,105 families in Metro Manila, Ilocos, Cagayan Valley, Central and Southern Luzon, and Bicol. According to the DSWD, the beneficiaries include families affected by typhoons Ondoy (international code name Ketsana), Pepeng (Parma) and Santi (Mirinae). "The family-beneficiaries received 75 percent of the regional wage rate in their respective areas. The regional wage rate ranges from P176 to P303 per day," it said. DSWD Secretary Corazon Soliman said the families received cash assistance in exchange for training and community services they rendered for 30 days. Among the community services rendered by the beneficiaries were:

  • river dredging and embankment
  • digging and dredging of canals and drainage
  • repair of small–scale irrigation
  • tree planting or reforestation projects
  • school clean-up through the “Brigada Eskwela 2011"
  • communal gardening
  • repair of damaged day care centers (DCCs) and other community facilities. The DSWD aims to help some 44,930 families affected by the three 2009 typhoons with a budget of P318.9 million. It said the remaining 39,825 beneficiaries are still completing their 30-day training and community service. - VVP, GMA News
