NDRRMC: 'Juaning' death toll rises to 66


The death toll from tropical cyclone Juaning (Nock-Ten) rose to 66 as of early Tuesday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said. In its 6 a.m. update, the NDRRMC indicated the latest fatalities were from the Bicol Region, even as it said at least 17 remained missing. At least 94 survivors have been rescued to date, the NDRRMC added. The latest fatalities included eight crewmembers of the fishing boat "Hope Christie." As of 4 p.m. Monday, 10 bodies had been recovered while nine remained missing. However, they were not immediately identified. The NDRRMC added the bodies were in an advanced state of decomposition and were brought to Roxas City for identification and disposition. A ninth fatality was identified as Ricardo Blanco, 47, Lucena City (drowning). The NDRRMC said Juaning affected at least 195,196 families or 981,166 people in 959 villages in 101 towns and 12 cities in 20 provinces. Of these, 20,850 families or 95,301 people are being served inside 252 evacuation centers. Damage to property was estimated at P1,764,103,673.67, including P1,242,906,899.66 in infrastructure and P521,196,774.01 in agriculture.
