PAGASA: 2-3 cyclones due in August

At least two to three cyclones are due to develop or enter Philippine territory in August, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said Tuesday. In its tropical cyclone outlook for August, PAGASA said at least one of these will be of "typhoon intensity" and may cross the Northern Luzon area. "One tropical cyclone with typhoon intensity [is]) expected to cross northern Luzon. [The] passage of [the tropical cyclone] over the PAR will enhance the southwest monsoon and may bring heavy rains," it said. The Philippines is presently feeling the effects of Typhoon Kabayan (Muifa), which has so far left four people dead. Kabayan entered Philippine territory in late July, while another cyclone, Tropical Depression Lando, formed inside the Philippines on July 31. Should three cyclones enter or form inside Philippine territory in August, they will be codenamed Mina, Nonoy, and Onyok. PAGASA said the peak of the southwest monsoon and tropical cyclone occurrences are expected and wet conditions are likely. It also said rainfall distribution in the country will range from 200 to 400 millimeters in major parts of the country, and more than 500 millimeters over the western side of Luzon and some parts of Visayas. “Flashfloods and landslides over low lying areas and mountainous regions are possible," PAGASA warned. — KBK, GMA News
