Swede nabbed for building nuclear reactor in kitchen

Swedish authorities arrested a 31-year-old man in Ängelholm in western Sweden after finding out that he was building a nuclear reactor in his kitchen. The man, who was not immediately named, had been chronicling the progress of the nuclear reactor in his blog. "(I) was arrested and sent to jail, when the police and the Swedish Radiation Safety Authory searched my apartment. They took all my radioactive stuff, but I was released after a hearing. But I am still suspekt for crime against the radiation safety law," he wrote in a blog post. He said the police ordered him to get out of the building with his hands up, after which three men with Geiger counters searched him. The man was then placed in a police-car, when Radiation Safety Authory went into his apartment with very advanced measure-tools. Although he did not specify the exact date of his arrest, the date on the blog indicated the arrest occurred late July. "So, my project is canceled!" he said in his blog, where he detailed some of his work. "The Local", a Swedish news site, said that the man began his experiment some six months ago. He said he ordered some radioactive material from overseas and acquired more by taking apart a domestic fire alarm. "Despite the man's frank and full disclosure of his experiment, his activities only came to the attention of the authorities a couple of weeks ago when he contacted the Swedish Radiation Authority (Strålsäkerhetsmyndigheten) to inquire if it was legal to construct a nuclear reactor at home," it said. The report said the man is reported to have spent around 6,000 kronor ($950) on his project. — TJD, GMA News
