Surigao Sur town mayor, 2 soldiers abducted by rebels

BUTUAN CITY — The mayor of Lingig town in Surigao del Sur and two military escorts were abducted early Saturday morning by suspected members of the New People’s Army, a police report said. Caraga Region Police Regional Director Chief Supt. Reynaldo Rafal confirmed the abduction of Mayor Henry S. Dano and two of his military escorts. Rafal said he immediately ordered the Surigao del Sur Police Provincial Police Office to investigate the incident while military and police operatives are pursuing the abductors. Citing initial information reaching him, Rafal said some 30 fully-armed NPA rebels on three vehicles arrived at the Dano residence in Lingig Poblacion around 6:30 a.m. and seized the mayor and his two escorts. An initial investigation showed one of the suspects, wearing a Barong Tagalog, knocked on the gate of the house of Mayor Dano and introduced himself as a National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) personnel. Other suspects were wearing camouflage uniforms. After one of the Dano household member opened the gate, the suspects immediately entered and disarmed the security guard, including the two military escorts of the mayor. Police report said the suspects boarded three vans with the Mayor and the two soldiers and headed toward Boston in Davao Oriental. — Ben Serrano/LBG, GMA News
