Comelec chief won't help 'kin' linked to 2004 poll fraud

Commission on Elections chair Sixto Brillantes Jr. on Saturday vowed not to lift a finger to help his relative linked to poll fraud in 2004. Brillantes, in a radio interview, said he personally told lawyer Roque Bello he will not help him if evidence emerges linking him to cheating in the election. “[When] I saw him at the Comelec, sabi ko humanda ka lang. Hindi kita matutulungan kung madawit ka," he said in an interview on dwIZ radio. Sen. Alan Peter Cayetano had earlier questioned Brillantes’ links to Bello, a lawyer linked to alleged ballot-switching operations in the 2004 election. Brillantes said he is not denying he and Bello are relatives. He also said he and Bello were law partners in early 1990s. On the other hand, Brillantes maintained he is making sure the Comelec and Department of Justice’s probe into poll fraud will be impartial. He said he is inclined to exclude himself from a special committee that will handle the investigation. “Sasali lang ako kung may findings ang committee at doon pwede ako di bumoto kung may direct bias ako. I don’t intend to participate," he said. — JE, GMA News
