22 OFW dependents in Misamis get scholarships

At least 22 dependents of overseas Filipino workers from Misamis Oriental have received scholarships under the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration’s (OWWA) OFW Dependent Scholarship Program. The 22 scholarship grants are part of the 68 slots allotted for Region X, with the remaining slots to be scheduled for awarding soon. The 22 beneficiaries signed contracts for the scholarship last Aug. 1. Provincial Gov. Oscar Moreno, Vice Gov. Norris Babiera, and members of the provincial board were present during the signing of the contracts. Under Memorandum of Instruction 003, the program offers financial assistance to qualified dependents of OFWs who are active OWWA members and who receive a monthly salary of not more than $400. Beneficiaries can enroll in any four- or five-year baccalaureate degree or associate degree leading to a baccalaureate degree, according to an article posted on Ang OFW Ngayon. They also receive financial assistance of P20,000 a year or P10,000 per semester to cover the tuition and academic-related expenses. Also, they get a group health and accident insurance worth P100,000 per scholar. Moreno said the OWWA office in Region X is one of the most dependable partner agencies, and voiced gratitude to it for being responsive to the requests of the province. — JE, GMA News
