Los Baños' 'Wonderama' popularizes science marvels

The Los Baños Science Community Foundation Inc. knew how to encourage students to take science seriously: present the concepts in a simple and interactive manner. At an exhibit in the University of the Philippines Los Baños last July 28 to 30 titled “Wonderama," research, inventions, and products of the foundation were presented in a rather playful manner. According to Roberto P. Cereno, deputy director of Makiling Center for Mountain Resources and vice chair for SyenSaya, the science community saw the need to go beyond the usual lectures or discussions. Cereno also said that repackaging science would allow the youth to have a better appreciation of the often misunderstood discipline. Wonderama — from the words “wonder" and “diorama — is an interactive science learning exhibit composed of three components: basic science principles, science appreciation, and application of science and technology. “When I conceptualized SyenSaya in 2008, I wanted to change the way science was presented. Kailangan masaya," Cereno added. The exhibit included simplified experiments on seemingly complex scientific concepts, like DNA extraction, Bioluminescence, and Robotics. It also addressed issues of climate change, food and agricultural production, energy, and the environment. — Anna Mae Lamentillo/TJD, GMA News
