PNoy seeks promotion of lady cop in counterattack vs NPA

President Benigno Aquino III on Monday ordered the immediate promotion of Inspector Charity Galvez to senior inspector for leading the defense against the attack of New People's Army. Aquino asked Interior Secretary Jesse Robredo why Galvez has not been promoted amid her "conspicous courage and gallantry in action". "Matanong ko lang si Kalihim Jesse Robredo, Inspector Charity? Parang bago yung insidente inspector na siya, maganda yung ginawa niya inspector pa rin," he said in his speech during the 110th service anniversary of the Philippine National Police. "Ang tagal po atang maging senior inspector," he added. It is the National Police Commission, which is under the DILG, that processes the promotion of police personnel. "Swerte po andito po ang Napolcom. Mukhang makoconfirm nila yung Senior Inspector sa lalong madaling panahon. Maikoconfirm ko na po yung Napolcom," Aquino said. NPA attack Galvez, newly installed police chief, led about 30 police and civilian personnel in repelling an assault on July 30 by over 200 NPA guerrillas in Trento, Agusan del Sur. “Hindi kami naubusan ng bala. Tuloy-tuloy ‘yung putukan," Galvez told GMA News Online. An Army brigade commander, however, placed the number of NPA attackers at 40. The rebels attacked the police station using three Isuzu trucks, with NPA forces deployed around the area. The hour-long firefight ended when the rebels left their vehicles and fled on foot. Among Galvez's personnel, one died, while another militia man also died while trying to come to their aid. In a statement issued July 31, the Philippine National Police (PNP) regional office in Caraga said Galvez and her personnel “courageously stood their ground" against the rebels who attacked the Trento Municipal Police Station. It was one of the biggest NPA assaults in a population center in recent years. - with Earl Victor Rosero, VVP, GMA News
