Imelda mum on final decision on Marcos burial

Former First Lady and incumbent Ilocos Norte Rep. Imelda Marcos on Wednesday remained tight-lipped on her family’s decision on the burial of her husband, the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Mrs. Marcos denied agreeing to Vice President Jejomar Binay’s recommendation to bury the former President in his home province, Ilocos Norte. “We did not talk about it [the burial]. Iba-iba ang naging interpretation, eh," she told reporters in a chance interview on Wednesday. Binay announced on Tuesday that the Marcos family has agreed to his proposal for the remains of former President Marcos to be given military honors and buried in Ilocos Norte. The late strongman’s son, Senator Ferdinand “Bongbong" Marcos Jr., however, denied reaching such agreement with Binay, saying they have yet to receive any formal announcement from Malacañang regarding the burial. Mrs. Marcos, for her part, said her family will ensure that her husband will get “a truly honorable and sacred resting place." “Basta kung saan siya ililibing, ang importante diyan, bayani naman si Marcos," she said. Binay was tasked by President Benigno Aquino III to decide on the burial of the former President, citing personal bias on the issue. Aquino’s father, Benigno Jr., died in 1983 in an assassination largely blamed on the Marcos dictatorship. The President’s mother, the late Corazon Aquino, replaced Marcos in 1986 after the dictator was ousted by a popular mass uprising known as the EDSA revolution. — PE/VS, GMA News
