NDRRMC: Dengue kills 6 in Antipolo; Ilocos death toll now 37


At least six people were confirmed dead due to dengue in one village in Antipolo City in Rizal province, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has reported. In an Aug. 10 report posted on its website Thursday, the NDRRMC said the six fatalities were among 456 people affected by dengue. "Out of the 456, six persons are confirmed dead. All are from Barangay Cupang," it said. But the NDRRMC did not name the six, or indicate when they died. For now, the NDRRMC said the Antipolo City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council provided medical assistance to those affected. It added the CALABARZON – Calamba, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon (Region IV-A) – Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council is working with local disaster management units to closely monitor the situation. Ilocos dengue death toll Meanwhile, the death toll from dengue in the Ilocos region rose to 37 as of August 7, the NDRRMC said late Wednesday. In an update posted on its website Wednesday night, the NDRRMC said the 37 deaths were from some 4,865 cases recorded in the region since Jan. 1. "Most commonly affected was the 10-14 years age group, majority were male," it said. A breakdown of the 37 deaths included:

  • 11 deaths in Ilocos Norte (477 cases)
  • 10 deaths in Pangasinan (1,028 cases)
  • Nine deaths in Ilocos Sur (1,332 cases)
  • Seven deaths in La Union (2,028 cases)
Earlier, the NDRRMC said dengue cases rose by 222 percent in the Ilocos region in the first seven months of 2011. In an Aug. 8 report posted on its website Tuesday, the NDRRMC said 4,665 cases were recorded from Jan. 1 to Aug. 2, compared to 1,450 in the same period in 2010. "This is 222 percent higher than the number of cases reported at the same period in 2010," it said. Ilocos Sur was also placed under a state of calamity to address the needs of patients. At least 32 deaths have been recorded so far this year, compared to 22 in the same period last year. — LBG, GMA News
