Pinoy nurses seek probe into closure of New York hospital

Filipino nurses and workers of a cash-strapped hospital in Queens, New York called for an investigation into the imminent closure of the facility this week. According to a report of the Asian Journal, elected officials joined the Filipinos in contesting the planned closure of Peninsula Hospital Center in Queens. More than 100 Filipino nurses and staffers may be among the 1,000 hospital workers who will lose their jobs when the century-old hospital closes on September 1, the Asian Journal reported. The report said the Peninsula Hospital has some $60 million in debt, amid accusations of mismanagement by hospital officials. “I am urging the State Health Department, NYS Attorney General and the NYS Comptroller’s Office to suspend accepting the closing plan until a formal investigation and audit is complete," the report quoted State Senator Malcolm Smith as saying last weekend. Smith said the hospital's closure may "potentially cause irreparable harm to a community already facing many challenges." Smith noted that the Peninsula Hospital Center provides care to around 35,000 patients visits each year. The Peninsula Hospital Center is the only hospital in the Rockaways and South Queens with the New York State Department of Health Stroke Center designation. The Asian Journal report cited a census showing that more than 40,000 Filipinos live in the Queens region in New York. - VVP, GMA News
