Phivolcs: Magnitude-5 quake rocks Mindoro, felt in NCR


A magnitude-5.0 quake rocked parts of the Southern Luzon region and was felt in parts of Metro Manila before noon Friday. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded at 10:29 a.m., and was tectonic in origin. "I would expect karamihan ng nakaramdam ng quake na ito sa Metro Manila ay nandun sa matataas na building," Phivolcs seismology department OIC Ishmael Narag said in an interview on dzBB radio. A Phivolcs bulletin updated at noon measured the quake at magnitude 5. The bulletin traced the epicenter to 8 km southwest of Abra de Ilog in Mindoro Occidental. It said the quake was felt at Intensity II in:

  • Pasig City
  • Pasay City
  • Manila
  • Alabang Muntinlupa
  • Batangas City
Also, it said no damage or aftershock was expected. For its part, the United States Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 5.1, with the epicenter at:
  • 25 km west of Calapan, Mindoro
  • 46 km south-southwest of Batangas
  • 138 km south of Manila
  • 164 km west-southwest of San Pedro, Laguna
