Int'l 'hacker olympics' kicks off in September

Ethical hackers, start your computers: A hacker version of the Olympics to raise awareness and ethics in information security will take place starting September. The Global Cyberlympics is the first international team ethical hacking championship aimed at "unifying global cyber defense through the Games." "The goal of the CyberLympics is to raise awareness towards increased education and ethics in information security. The mission of the Global CyberLympics is Unifying Global Cyber Defense through the Games," the organizers said in the event's website. An article on the Wireless Industry Partnership website indicated that the Cyberlympics will be held September 22 to 26. Finals will be held in North America (east and west), South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle East and India and Africa. Organized by the International Council of Electronic Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), the Games have three objectives, according to the Games website and Facebook page:

  • Capacity building: to discover new talents, methods and ideas; and to encourage development in the field of information security.
  • Raising awareness: to educate the global community, especially in developing nations and third world countries on the issues of information security, and encourage further development.
  • Global peace: to foster friendship and create cohesiveness between information security professionals, whether as an individual, representing a corporation or for a national agency, and encourage frequent exchange of essential information, technology and skills.
The Global CyberLympics is a team-based computer network attack and defense competition. A team will have four to six players, all of the same nationality. The team will be responsible for defending their own network while attacking others. The teams will hunt exploits, pick locks and keep services up and running while keeping other attackers out. — TJD, GMA News
