Phivolcs: Magnitude-4.8 quake hits Ilocos area


A magnitude-4.8 quake rocked the Ilocos area in northern Luzon before dawn Monday, even as there was no initial report of damage or casualty. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the predawn quake was recorded at 2:13 a.m., and was tectonic in origin. In its bulletin, it said the epicenter was 185 km northwest of Laoag City in Ilocos Norte. However, it did not immediately list specific areas where the quake was felt. Phivolcs said no damage or aftershock was expected from the quake. Meanwhile, a magnitude-4.9 quake rocked in Western Visayas Sunday afternoon, generating a "moderately strong" quake in Antique province. Phivolcs said the quake was recorded at 3:38 p.m. In its bulletin, Phivolcs said the epicenter was 46 km northwest of Buruanga town in Aklan province. It said the quake was felt at Intensity IV in Libertad, Antique; and at Intensity I in Lezo, Aklan. Phivolcs considers an Intensity IV quake “moderately strong." "(An Intensity IV quake is) felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objectsswing considerably. Dinner plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard," it said.
