Pinoy seamen in Portugal take part in AIDS awareness drive

As part of their HIV-AIDS awareness campaign, Philippine officials in Portugal visited some Filipino seafarers aboard a cable ship docked at the Port of Lisbon. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said embassy officials conducted an information drive on August 11 for the crewmembers of the cable ship. "Vice Consul Rogelio Villanueva Jr. discussed issues and presented leaflets on HIV-AIDS Awareness, including the risks and consequences of contracting the dreaded disease. Discussions were focused on the increasing number of HIV-AIDS cases worldwide and seafaring as one of the high-risk professions," the DFA said in a news release. Every year hundreds of ships visit the ports of Portugal including the island of Açores. The DFA noted that Filipino seafarers comprise more than a fifth of the total number of seafarers in the world. Aside from the HIV-AIDS information campaign, the officials gave the Filipino seafarers tips on how to invest their savings and other economic opportunities in the Philippines. - VVP, GMA News
