Malacañang rejects calls for 'ceasefire' on probe against Arroyos

Malacañang on Monday rejected calls for a “ceasefire" in the investigations against former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Arroyo and her husband former First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo. Presidential Spokesman Edwin Lacierda said the wheels of justice should continue to turn regardless of who are affected Because of their medical condition, calls were made to stop the investigations on alleged graft committed by the Arroyos during the former President’s nine years in office. Agreeing to a ceasefire on the investigations may also set a bad precedent, according to the Palace official. “When you say ceasefire kasi titigil po ‘yung mga investigation — if that is what you’re saying… The wheels of justice must turn… If we’re going to do that for one particular person, then due process should require us to stop all investigations to other persons as well," Lacierda said. Malacañang is not heartless and in fact is wishing the Arroyo couple well especially the former President who is battling infection and preparing for another surgery, he said. But that does not mean that pursuing the ongoing investigations should stop, he added. “Ang point lang namin ho, may mga nagsasampa ng kaso, may mga nagfa-file, syempre, pag-aaralan po ‘yung mga kaso. This is not to say that we are heartless. I think this is totally different from being heartless. We have laws that we are supposed to execute. There is investigation process going on so we will investigate," Lacierda said. — VS, GMA News
