Dengue reaches 'alert threshold' in Quezon City

The deadly disease dengue has reached the "alert threshold" in Quezon City as the number of cases there continued to rise, city health officials said. However, radio dzBB's Allan Gatus reported on Tuesday that the city is not yet declaring an outbreak because the cases are not concentrated in a single area. An alert threshold means that the number of dengue cases exceeded the usual number of cases but has not yet reached epidemic proportion. The report said city health officials are also keeping watch over at least six areas where dengue cases are rising:

  • Bagbag
  • San Bartolome
  • Gulod
  • Commonwealth
  • Batasan Hills
  • Holy Spirit Quezon City Health Office head Dr. Antonietta Enumerable said they have so far recorded at least 3,447 cases in the city, or 1,264 more than the number of cases in the same period last year. At least 28 dengue-related deaths have been recorded in the city so far this year. The report said city officials advised residents to wear long-sleeved shirts, pajamas to minimize the chances of being bitten by dengue-carrying mosquitoes. - VVP, GMA News
