Apple releases first 'major' OSX Lion update

Apple Inc. on Wednesday (Manila time) released the first "major" update for its Mac OS X Lion operating system, which it said will enhance "stability and compatibility." In a support page on its website, Apple said that the updates include fixes to issues related to Wifi, audio and video:

  • Addressing an issue that may cause the system to become unresponsive when playing a video in Safari.
  • Resolve an issue that may cause system audio to stop working when using HDMI or optical audio out.
  • Improve the reliability of Wi-Fi connections.
  • Resolve an issue that prevents transfer of your data, settings, and compatible applications to a new Mac running OS X Lion.
  • Resolve an issue in which an admin user account could be missing after upgrading to OS X Lion.
Apple advised users to back up their systems before installation, adding they can use the Time Machine feature. It also advised them not to interrupt the installation process once they started updating the system. "You may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications installed, or if you've modified the operating system through other means," it said. On the other hand, Apple advised users to install other software updates available for their computers that may appear during the update process. A separate article on PC Magazine said the special OS X Lion 10.7.1 update for Mac Minis and MacBook Airs will:
  • Resolve an issue where MacBook Air may boot up when MagSafe Adapter is attached.
  • Resolve an issue causing intermittent display flickering on MacBook Air.
  • Resolve an issue that causes the SD card slot in Mac mini to run at reduced speed with SD and SDHC media.
'Mere' 17mb update Meanwhile, tech site Mashable noted the update weighs in at a relatively light 17.4 MB. It said this was "a nice departure from the hefty updates of old." — TJD, GMA News
