13 people killed in Cebu road accident – police

(Updated 6:42 p.m.) Thirteen people were reported killed while 40 others were hurt when a dump truck carrying mourners fell into a cliff while on its way to a cemetery in Cebu province's Barili town, police said Thursday. Chief Inspector Marlon Gumabao of Barili police said eight died on the spot while others perished at a hospital. In an earlier report, Central Visayas police Chief Supt. Ager Ontog Jr said the accident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in Barili town's Barangay Kangdampas. He said the dump truck was on its way to the Barili Cemetery. An initial investigation showed the dump truck carrying an undetermined number of people turned turtle after losing its brakes and fell into a cliff. Those who were seriously injured were rushed to the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center in Cebu City, Ontog said, adding that those who suffered minor injuries were brought to the Barili District Hospital. "[The] driver is under custody for charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and physical injuries," Gumabao said. — LBG/KBK, GMA News
